MAR 28, 2003 (newstodate)Aeroflot breaks new practice among airlines by making safety a competitive issue.
According to the airline's homepage, "Aeroflot, Russia's national air carrier, says a growing number of foreign passengers are using its services in a shift away from rival British and US airlines which could be vulnerable to heightened security concerns because of the Iraqi conflict."
A spokesman said he estimated that in the last few days, 5 per cent of non-Russians who would normally fly on foreign airlines had switched to Aeroflot routes for reasons of safety.
It has till now been a tacit understanding among airlines not to expose safety issues in marketing and sales campaigns.
