Copenhagen, FEB 03, 2003 (newstodate): Published statistics for Finnair Cargo through 2002 are clear evidence of a relatively good year despite difficult markets, says Juha Kinnunen, new Finnair Cargo vp & mng dir since the turn of the year.
-In 2002 we lifted a total of 72,084 tonnes of air cargo, up a modest 0.5 percent against the preceding year. This must, however, be seen against a 16.4 percent drop in domestic airfreight, and another 57.9 percent fall in cargo carried on leisure flights. Our trans-Atlantic freighter operations also didnt live up to budgets, with a 20.2 shortfall against 2001.
-But still the bulk of our total cargo tonnage, corresponding to 58,362 tonnes, is carried on scheduled services, and this figure was up 8.7 percent in 2002, also comprising a record-breaking 47.8 increase in Far Eastern tonnages, now constituting almost 30 percent of our total airfreight.
-Im convinced that with the expansive plans by Finnair to add one MD-11 in 2003, plus further destinations and frequencies in the Far East, we will manage to do pretty well provided no major global disasters occur.
