FEB 19, 2003 (newstodate): JAT and Belgrade Airport have published a plan to relaunch Belgrade as the regional hub for passengers and cargo.
This was stated at a news conference on Regional Air Traffic Development in Serbia, according to JAT.
-The region of SE Europe comprises a potential market with 65 million inhabitants. The former Yugoslav republics alone account for 10 airlines and 50 aircraft, of which as many as one-half are registered in Belgrade, said JAT Management Board Chairman, Miroslav Stefanovic at the conference.
JAT and Belgrade Airport will work jointly on the USD 500 million project.
The principal goal is to increase passenger volumes to two million in 2004, of which JAT is to transport at least 1.2 million.
The target builds on re-developing the transit traffic that in 1990 accounted for 60 percent of JATs overall traffic, with Belgrade as transit hub.
JAT and Belgrade Airport will now work to obtain all the necessary international certificates and licenses, modernize flight control in terms of personnel and equipment, introduce airport rail transportation, build an airport hotel, a cargo terminal, renovate the airport building, introduce CAT III conditions, and set up a bonded zone with cargo center at Belgrade airport.
