FEB 20, 2003 (newstodate): Air Greenland plans to start operations from April 28 on a route from Copenhagen to Akureyri/Iceland and back.
-Provided traffic rights are granted, we intend initially to fly twice weekly, Mondays and Thursdays, eventually adding Tuesdays and Fridays as well, says Finn Oelund, Air Greenland managing director
Oelund says the flights will be operated with Air Greenland's Boeing 757, while longer-term plans include the use of an Airbus A310 instead if warranted by sustained success of the route in the market.
According to Oelund, Icelandic export airfreight is a strong, motivating factor behind the decision to start Icelandic operations.
-Two major Icelandic fishing industries are located in the Akureyri region, generating very signifiant loads of export airfreight to European markets, says Oelund.
Akureyri Airport's runway is 1,940 meter, sufficient for both aircraft types, says Oelund.
The freight capacity of a fully loaded Boeing 757 is 5-7 tonnes, while the A310 may lift up to 8-10 tonnes of containerized cargo.
