FEB 03, 2003(newstodate): Ten out of the 24 wide body jets of Air Atlanta were engaged in this year's Hajj operations, including eight B747s and two B767s.
The airline says that 300,000 pilgrims will be carried this year, making this the second largest Hajj in the companys history.
The flights are between Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and cities in Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
This is the eleventh year of Atlantas participation in the Hajj. Approximately 350 employees from Air Atlanta are working in this project and if one counts the flight attendants from the four airlines Atlanta is flying for, the number goes to 900.
The respective airlines are: Garuda in Indonesia, Air Asia in Malaysia, Albarka in Nigeria, and Saudi Arabian Airlines in Saudi Arabia.
Last year's Hajj included 12 jets participating, and 400 thousand pilgrims carried.
Approximately two million people travel every year to Mecca, and the airline estimates that between 700 and 800 thousand travel by air.
The Muslim states are allocated a quota every year, which is about one percent of the population of the respective states. If they do not use the full quota it is transferred to other states that are applying for larger numbers.
The second half of the pilgrimage ends on March 15th.
