DEC 10, 2003 (newstodate): Taiwan is a booming market for Norwegian salmon, a senior official with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council said in Taiwan on Tuesday.
According to Arne Hjeltnes, chief representative of the export council for Southeast Asia, Taiwan imported 3,000 tons of Norwegian salmon in 2002. Japan, Norway's biggest overseas market, consumed 17,000 tons of the fish last year, followed by Hong Kong with 7,000 tons, and China with 5,000 tons.
Norway produces 440,000 tons of salmon every year, surpassing Canada's 200,000 tons and Scotland's 100,000 tons, according to Hjeltnes.
According to CASS figures, Norwegian exports to Taipei ibn IATA carriers increased by 32.4 percent during January-August, totalling 544 tonnes.
