DEC 30, 2003 (newstodate): Despite its magnitude the current earthquake disaster in Iran may not trigger a correspondingly great demand for aircraft charters for relief operations.
-As there is already a massive build-up of relief equipment and emergency supplies in the Middle East region in anticipation of a vawe of refugees from Iraq that never materialised, relief organistions have largely been able to respond to the demands in Iran by forwarding resources from these hubs, rather than having to fly in relief materials from the outside, says Ulf Gregersen, Aircontact in Norway.
Gregersen also points to the current near-chaos in the Iranian airport close to the disaster scene where aircraft have to wait up to 12 hours to get their shipments off-loaded due to the availability of only one hi-loader.
