DEC 10, 2003 (newstodate): From December 1, Korean Air has been operating a weekly freighter service into Helsinki at full loads. The issue of the return flight is, however, still unresolved.
The Helsinki-service is a ex-Seoul exports flight only, so the aircraft is now routed empty to Luxembourg due to lack of traffic rights out of Finland.
-We are in serious negotiations with Finnair and will definitely not make any move that might go against this airline in its own home market, says Martin Wildner, Korean Air cargo assistant manager.
Wildner says, the ideal soilution would be a commercial agreement with Finnair to share the operation out of Helsinki, but so far the inbound flights are operated on charter basis to bring Korean commodities into Finland.
According to Wildner, the return flight from Luxembourg is operated with small loads.
-The ex-Luxembourg volumes to the Far East are there, but rates in the market are severely depressed due to heavy over-capacity on the eastbound flights produced by the inexhaustible demand for freighter capacity from the Far East and China towards Europe and the USA, says Wildner.
