DEC 12, 2003 (newstodate): Aeroflot plans to scale down its activities in North America, shifting focus to Asia and domestic services instead.
-On the west coast, we will continue flying to Los Angeles, but will drop either Seattle or San Francisco as of next summer season, says Valery Okulov, Aeroflot CEO.
Aeroflot has already terminated service to Chicago and Miami as part of a strategy to close down lossmaking routes, and use its existing fleet to meet growing demand in Asia and at home instead.
Aeroflot expects domestic and Asian operations to increase by 30 percent next year, while overall passenger numbers are expected to increase 15 percent.
Aeroflot's move away from North America is also driven by the carrier's current shortage of aircraft capacity.
Aeroflot currently operates 78 aircraft but needs to boost that number to 150, according to the CEO.
Aeroflot has agreed on the acquisition of six IL-96-300 aircraft under a 15 years lease arrangement with the Russian bank that owns 30 percent of the airline.
