NOV 13, 2003 (newstodate): Work has started on a new tunnel at the Faroe Island, further improving the infrastructure of the country.
The road tunnel, scheduled for completion in August 2006, will be a 6.2 kilometers long underwater tunnel serving as a link between the most northerly islands, Eysturoy and Bordoy, where the town of Klaksvig is located.
In January, 2003, the Vagar tunnel was opened for traffic, facilitating direct traffic between the only international airport at Vagar with the capital, Torshavn.
-With the new tunnel now under construction, the importance of aviation and not least air cargo will be further strengthened, says Finnbogi Niclasen, Vagar airport manager.
The airport is still striving to see the opening of a scheduled freighter connection between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, to facilitate exports of fresh fish products from the Faroe Islands, and now pins its hopes on the increased accessability of the airport through the new infrastructural project.
Talks with Maersk Air Cargo have been conducted, so far yielding no results.
