NOV 21, 2003 (newstodate): Norway's export of fresh salmon to its main market, Japan, was down 14.4 percent during the period January-September.
The total volume was 17,488 tonnes, down from 20,437 tonnes last year.
Even more crucial to the exporters, the average prices were down from last year's NOK 26.89 to NOK 23.52 for the prime product.
The month of September saw some increase in volume, however, up 7.6 percent, but market value was still significantly below last year's prices.
Much of the salmon air cargo to Japan is taken on scheduled twice-weekly Aeroflot freighters out of Oslo, the rest on a mix of airlines that truck the cargo to gateways in Sweden, Denmark and the continent.
