NOV 06, 2003 (newstodate): No solution has yet been found to the issue of the Canada/Russia rift over use of airspace.
The rift is based on a political disagreement of the status of India as either belonging to th Asia-Pacific region, as Canada maintains, or outside the region, as Russia maintains.
Under the current aviation agreement between Canada and Russia Canada may fly through Russian airspace en-route between Canada and destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.
But as Russia does not consider India as part of this region, it has objected to Air Canada's flights, since mid-October, between Toronto and Delhi through Russian airspace.
Canada has since retaliated by limiting the number of Aeroflot flights from Moscow to Toronto.
Negotiations are still being conducted, but no solutions has yet been reached.
