NOV 10, 2003 (newstodate): At the recent Annual European Regional IFATCA Meeting, 150 controllers from 37 countries aired serious
concerns on the current European ATC System.
-In order to drive down costs, Air Navigation Service Providers are forcing through methods of operation which include reducing the number of controllers on duty, advocating the increased use of Single Person Operations, increasing the retirement age, and generally operating the ATC system at a basic level, a statement from the meeting reads.
-In the opinion of operational controllers, this cost driven environment is compromising safety, and this is unacceptable. An appropriate level of funding and staffing is required to ensure safe operations now and in the future.
