OCT 16, 2003 (newstodate): UN organization WFP warns that its operations in Angola will be "seriously hampered" unless immediate donations of USD 2.5 million are granted.
-The funds are urgently needed to finance two special air operations which benefit more than 200 humanitarian agencies working in Angola. Without the necessary response, WFP may have to reduce or suspend its air transport service as early as November, the organization says in a statement.
According to WFP, some 2,000 aid workers and 500 tonnes of non-food items are transported each month in Angola.
WFP says that so far this year its special operations have received contributions from the United States, USD 2 million, the Netherlands, USD 750,000, Denmark, USD 461,000, Norway, USD 250,000 and Germany, USD 173,000.
However, WFP says the passenger air transport service currently needs contributions worth USD 1.6 million to maintain operations until March 2004, while the non-food items air cargo service requires USD 3.17 million over the next 14 months.
