OCT 16, 2003 (newstodate): In September, airfreight volumes at Copenhagen Airport fell 12.9 percent year-on-year, to a total of 28,797 tonnes.
For the period January-September, the decline was 11.3 percent, with totals at 245,389 tonnes.
Behind the bleak figures is the sustained drop in transfer cargo loads that were down by 22.1 percent in September, and by 17.9 percent for January-September.
According to the airport, the decline in transfer loads is primarily due to the changed hub-pattern by DHL Aviation that is now bypassing Copenhagen on several of its Nordic services.
In September, the airport's import cargo increased by 15.5 percent, and exports were up by 13.1 percent. But as transfer cargo still constituted 66.8 percent of all volumes, this was not sufficient to counterbalance the overall drop.
Further adding a perspective to the airport's nice performance in imports and exports is the fact that much cargo in and out of Copenhagen is in reality destined for, or originating in, the Swedish market as Scandinavian forwarders increasingly consolidate their shipments at Copenhagen Airport due to the strength of its traffic system.
