OCT 20, 2003 (newstodate): As part of the on-going negotiations between EU and Lithuania prior to the country's membership by next year, Kaunas International Airport has secured rights to continue operations by noisy Stage 2 aircraft for a period.
-An agreement in favour of Kaunas Airport has been reached, whereby we have secured exemption from the EU noise regulations up to 2005, says Rimantas Skridaila, Kaunas International Airport Director General.
-Thus Kanuas will be the only airport in Lithuania permitted to handle aircraft like IL-76, as noise regulations will be imposed on other airports in Lithuania from 2004, he says.
This may, however, not be entirely true. According to other sources in the Lithuanian aviation industry, Siauliai Airport will also be able to handle IL-76 aircraft after the country's entry into the EU, as the airport will be classified as a military airport with commercial traffic. As such, Siauliai will not be party to the EU noise regulations.
