OCT 20, 2003 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport expects to see cargo volumes down by some 30 percent this year.
-In 2002, Kaunas International Airport was considered a leader of cargo handling in the Baltic States, handling about 10,000 tonnes of cargo. However, due to the military situation in Iraq and the mysterious SARS disease this year we have experienced a noticeable decrease in cargo flow. Referring to the projective results of this year, we will probably end up with 7,000 tonnes of import cargos in our airport, says Rimantas Skridaila, Kaunas International Airport Director General.
According to Skridaila, most of the airport's cargo comes from countries in Eastern Asia, mainly transferred to Russia by ground transportation from the airport.
