OCT 14, 2003 (newstodate): From November 2, Icelandair Cargo plans to introduce a new freighter service from Liege in Belgium via Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport, to Boston, Logan Airport.
The service wil be operated once weekly with Boeing 757-200PF offering a cargo capacity at up to 39 tonnes.
-The new flight comes in when the demand for fresh whitefish is peaking in the US, and complements Icelandair's daily passenger flights carrying 5 to 10 tons of mainly fresh Icelandic seafood. Approximately half the load will be general freight originating in Europe and half will be Icelandic fresh fish, says Petur J Eiriksson, Icelandair Cargo managing director.
The return flight from Boston is operated via Halifax, served by Icelandair Cargo for almost a year with 757 freighters originating in New York.
By combining Halifax with Boston the uplift in Halifax of mainly live lobster can be doubled. The lobster is transferred at Keflavik Airport over the Icelandair Cargo network to Scandinavia and Central Europe.
With the introduction of the new route, Icelandair Cargo's three weekly flights to New York, JFK remain unchanged, while the frequency between Reykjavik and Liege is increased from six to seven flights per week.
