OCT 15, 2003 (newstodate): A strategic change in Greenland's infrastructure is being planned with the proposed construction of a 170 km long road to connect coastal Sisimiut with the country's largest airport, Kangerlussuaq.
Sisimiut commune, at Greenland's southwest coast, has achieved support for the Home Rule authority to go ahead with the preliminary planning and analysis of all pertinent issues.
The road is expected to be opened by October 1, 2008 after estimated investments of DKK 250-300 million and three years of construction work.
If realised, the projected road will allow Sisimiut's exporters of fresh fish to truck shipments into Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport for flights to European and other markets.
Trucking will take 2.5-3 hours while exporters in the Sisimiut region are now fully incapable of taking their shipments by air to outside consumer markets, relying on exports of frozen fish by sea transportation instead.
In addition, the proposed road will also facilitate easier imports of goods from Denmark and other markets, and better access to air transportation will have a huge impact on Greenland's domestic and international intercourse as well.
-It is a most realistic project, and despite its unique character it is really, literally speaking, most "down to earth", says Niels Rask Andersen, Sisimiut Commune CEO.
-The project is viable and feasible, and will result in greatly reduced air cargo rates for transports to and from Greenland as well, he says.
