OCT 09, 2003 (newstodate): Embraer has scored a major boost to its portfolio by certification of its ERJ 135 aircraft for steep approach operations.
This will allow operators of the aircraft type to fly into airports such as London City Airport, the ERJ 135 thus becoming the first Embraer jet authorized for these operations.
Instrument landing approach procedure is deemed as steep when the glide slope is greater than or equals 4.5 degrees in relation to horizon. While the standard instrument landing glide slope angle is 3.0 degrees, at London City Airport the glide angle is as great as 5.5 degrees.
Normally the steep approach instrument landing procedure is used over great urban centers to reduce noise, or in areas surrounded by mountains.
The certification will greatly enhance operators' options in the commercial airport market.
