OCT 09, 2003 (newstodate): Naviair, a subsidiary of the Danish CAA and provider of ATM services, has signed a contract with the South African CAA for a temporary lease of ATC controllers.
The agreement, already taking effect, comprises the stationing of seven to 11 ATC controllers at Johannesburg for a period of 17 months.
-We currently have a surplus of ATC controllers due to the moderate development in air traffic volumes, and our South African partners had a similar lack of staff due to a traffic increase, says Kurt Andreasen, Naviair spokesman.
Andreasen says the deal is a perfect match as the Danish ATC staff will be working with the AIRCAT 2000 ATM system, delivered by Thales, which is also to be implemented in Copenhagen Airport, albeit in a slighly more sophisticated version.
-The experience gained will significantly benefit the implementation process later on in Copenhagen, Andreasen says.
