Copenhagen, JAN 23, 2003 (newstodate): After the opening of the new tunnel connecting the Faroe Island's capital, Thorshavn, with its airport at Vagar, conditions are ripening for a freighter service between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, says the airport's director.
With the tunnel, traffic to and from the airport avoids the congested ferry connection between the islands, and the queing for space onboard. This earlier resulted in trucks with air cargo having to book earlier ferry departures in order not to miss flights, thereby extending total transport times significantly.
-So far, dialogue between Maersk Air Cargo and Faroese exporters of fresh fish about opening af freighter service has produced no results. As the infrastructure has now been significantly improved I hope talks will be resumed. This is a historic chance, says Finnbogi Niclasen, Vagar Airport director.
Due to insufficient runway length, a Boeing 737 freighter cannot operate without a weight penalty, but according to Niclasen it can still take off with about 10 tonnes of air cargo out of Vagar under existing conditions.
Plans for expansion of the airport's runway capacity are already available, pending political decision.
