Copenhagen, JAN 27, 2003 (newstodate): Airfreight volumes were up 139 percent to 14,404 tonnes in 2002 at Swedish airport, Malmoe Sturup.
The explosive development was due to UPS' decision from April 2002 to locate its hub serving the Oresund region at the airport that had a modest total of 5,639 tonnes of air cargo in 2001.
UPS flies daily at Malmoe connecting its European hub with Oslo and Helsinki besides serving the eastern part of the Danish market. The western part of this market is served by a small freighter operation at Aarhus Airport (formerly Billund Airport).
Besides UPS, TNT also operates at Malmoe since 2000
