Sep 24, 2018 (newstodate): Uzbekistan is to raise the efficiency of the cargo services at the country's Navoi Airport.
Earlier this month, Uzbekistan and IATA signed a Joint Action Plan for 2018 -2025, under which IATA will assist Uzbekistan in its efforts to develop cargo transportation through Navoi International Inter-modal Logistics Center, and to harmonize the airspace of Uzbekistan.
The airport's cargo terminal, commissioned on August 12, 2010, has an annual capacity of handling up to 100,000 tonnes and provides a vital element in the plan to set up an international logistics center at Navoi as contained in the agreement between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air, signed in February 2008.
Equipped by South Koreas Kyung Sang Machinery Co, the terminal can process 300 tonnes of freight per day or 100,000 tonnes a year.
The development of the Navoi international inter-modal logistics center has, however, failed to live up to expectations, and the project received harsh criticism from the country's president at a meeting on December 6, 2017, devoted to issues of improving activities at Navoi.
An analysis of activities of the center, presented at the meeting, shows that, despite the granted benefits, the capabilities of the terminal are not used at full capacity.
Less than 20 percent of the 100,000 tonnes capacity of the center is operated, and over the past eight years only 300,000 tonnes of cargo have actually been transported through Navoi Airport.
The forecast for 2017 predicted that the total cargo turnover at the terminal will decrease by 11 percent, compared to 2016, to 33,000 tonnes, and only two flights per day were then handled at the airport.
Contributing to the bad situation are lack of sufficient fuel, high airport and handling charges and not least bad management, the president stressed.
