May 22, 2018 (newstodate): Riga Airport seems to hold high ambitions for welcoming the launch of flights to China in 2018.
In an interview with Latvia's LNT commercial TV channel on May 18, Iona Lice, Riga Airport's Chairman of the Board, said that while she could not disclose further details, plans are being negotiated with an unnamed carrier for start of services to China from Riga Airport already by fall 2018.
Latvia and China have long been in talks over a strengthened cooperation in issues of commercial air services.
On September 12, 2017, Latvia's Minister of Transportation thus met with a delegation from Air China's European Bureau to discuss opportunities for cooperation between Air China and Latvia's air traffic service providers.
In connection with the meeting, the General Manager of Air China's European Bureau said that she saw potential for cooperation with airBaltic, as airBaltic's hub is ideally located for European routes.
-Air China must first consider co-operation models such as code-share or interline agreements, to prepare for the future setup of direct flights, she said.
