Sep 18, 2017 (newstodate): Ukraine and Slovakia have shared interests in Uzhgorod Airport, on the Trans-Carpathian border between the two countries.
Formerly an air force base, the airport has long been out service, but efforts have repeatedly been made to revive traffic and find a role for the airport after reconstruction.
Already in 2010, Uzhgorod Airport that lies across the border with Slovakia, was considered a venue serving as a new entry point for ex-China exports to Europe, including EU markets.
If the airport would pass an EASA audit to regain its certification, huge investments would be needed as the infrastructure is now outdated.
A fresh idea is to sell the airport to an EASA-certified EU carrier, and interest has already been aired from yet-unnamed European low-cost operators.
