Dec 09, 2016 (newstodate): The European Commission has updated the EU Air Safety List comprising airlines that do not meet international safety standards and are therefore banned from operations into EU, or operate with specific limitations.
The main news is that the ban on airlines registered in Kazakhstan has been lifted, allowing for free access to and from and within EU markets.
After this, not least Air Astana will be free to expand its business with new routes into Europe.
On the dark side, three individual airlines are now banned from EU airspace, based on safety concerns: Iran Aseman Airlines, Iraqi Airways and Surinam's Blue Wing Airlines.
An additional six airlines are subject to operational restrictions and can only fly to the EU with specific aircraft types, including also North Korea's Air Koryo and Iran Air.
Airlines on the black list comprising a total of 193 companies can, however, operate routes into EU countries using wet leased aircraft, operated by a carrier which is not subject to an operating ban.
