Sep 29, 2016 (newstodate): Drones and UAVs are increasingly adding to congestion in airspace, causing potential threats to aircraft operations around airports.
To alleviate the risk of interference with commercial air traffic, the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency and DroneRadar are developing a smartphone app for drone operators.
DroneRadar is an app designed to boost situational awareness of drone operators and make both manned and unmanned flying in Polish airspace safer. The main idea is to safely integrate drone traffic into both controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
DroneRadar gathers information about the drone operators current location. After Checking-in, the data is sent in real time to PANSAs Air Traffic Services. A simple three light "status indicator", red, yellow and green dot, informs the drone operator if the location and time are OK to fly.
DroneRadar also provides information to General Aviation pilots about drones flying nerby.
Operational testing is underway in Class G Airspace, but controlled airports such as Gdansk, Lodz, Poznan and Krakow have also joined the tests.
