Feb 03, 2025 (newstodate): Circulating as a rumor for some time already, Ryanair has now confirmed the closure of its operational base at Denmark's Billund Airport.
With the decision, Ryanair will withdraw two Boeing 737 aircraft from Billund as well as closing down the base comprising cockpit and cabin crew members.
Citing "the Danish Government’s short-sighted decision to introduce an aviation tax of up to DKK 50 per departing passenger from Jan 2025, coupled with Billund’s failure to agree a competitive long-term agreement", Ryanair is also to suspend all flights at Denmark's Aalborg Airport served since April 2017.
Ryanair made its entry in Denmark at Billund Airport on January 24, 2007, and in March 2012, Ryanair established its 48th base at the airport serving western Denmark.
But due to union protest and labor actions against Ryanair's opening of its second Danish base at Copenhagen Airport from March 2015, Ryanair closed down both bases in Denmark by July 2015.
After finally reaching a deal with the Danish unions, Ryanair returned to Billund Airport in November 2021, allotting two aircraft to the base.
